Montana Legislative Session Update: Month One Recap

January 30, 2025 12:41 pm

DC Trip January 2025As we wrap up the first month of the 2025 Montana Legislative Session, there has been a noticeable contrast in activity between the two chambers. While the Senate has had a slow start, the House wasted no time diving into committee hearings for several bills. With over 4,350 bill placeholders currently in the system and many still awaiting finalized language, we anticipate an increasingly busy schedule in the coming weeks.

At Montana’s Credit Unions, we are closely tracking numerous bills that could impact our industry. Stay tuned for updates and please reach out to me with any legislative questions. We expect to see movement on key bills affecting credit unions in the next week or two.

Key Advocacy Highlights

At the Capitol: MCU participated in the Montana Chamber of Commerce’s Business Days at the Capitol, engaging with business leaders and policymakers to ensure the voice of credit unions remains strong in the state’s economic discussions.
Montana Council of Cooperatives Annual Meeting & Legislator Reception

As part of our commitment to collaboration, MCU attended the Montana Council of Cooperatives (MCOC) Annual Meeting and Legislator Reception. This event provided an opportunity to connect with cooperative leaders and lawmakers, reinforcing the important role credit unions play in Montana’s cooperative economy.

MCU’s Inaugural Hike the Hill: A major milestone for MCU advocacy, we hosted our first-ever Hike the Hill event at the Montana Capitol. Credit union leaders from across the state gathered in Helena to meet with legislators, discuss industry priorities, and strengthen relationships with key decision-makers. This event was a powerful demonstration of our collective commitment to ensuring Montana’s credit unions remain a vital resource for their communities.

Federal Engagement: Beyond state-level advocacy, our efforts extended to Washington, D.C., where three Montana credit union CEOs joined me to meet with Senator Steve Daines to discuss tax reform. Our primary focus was on maintaining the current tax status for credit unions, ensuring that we continue to provide financial services that prioritize people over profit.

Looking Ahead: As the legislative session progresses, we anticipate increased engagement opportunities for our Credit Union Advocacy Champions. Expect to be contacted in the coming weeks with requests to participate in hearings and testify on behalf of key bills impacting our industry. Your voice is critical in shaping policy that supports the mission and growth of Montana’s credit unions.

We appreciate your continued dedication to credit union advocacy and look forward to working together to make a meaningful impact on this session.
