Mile High FCU makes Emotional Contribution to St. James Cancer Center

“Mile High FCU ran a fundraiser last October where we asked for donations from our members and in return, they got a pink breast cancer awareness pin to show their support. At the end of the month, we matched the funds raised by our members. We reached out to the St. James Cancer Center and asked what would be the most useful way for the money raised to be contributed. Of course, they mentioned things like hats, scarves, lotions, etc… But then, they told us that they’ve been wanting to get a bell purchased for the cancer fighters/survivors to ring when they receive good news — and the best news, finish their treatment. As soon as we heard this idea, we knew it was how we wanted to be involved, as it brought literal tears to all of our eyes. With the money raised/donated, Mile High was able to purchase a custom bell, lotions, and lots of hats. The remainder of the money was spent was donated to the St. James Cancer Center.
“On February 6, all of Mile High’s staff was invited to the unveiling of the bell. A local cancer survivor (Trey Owens) was there with his wife and rang the bell for the first time. Trey was diagnosed with cancer during the pandemic and spent all of his treatment sessions alone — as family was not allowed into the hospital. That made this even more special that his wife could be by his side as he celebrated his victory. It was a very simple project that we wanted to do and never expected it to turn into something this grand. It was a very special moment for us to be a part of, as one of our own coworkers’ mom is a cancer survivor and again fighter. We could not have done this without such support from all our Mile High’s amazing members. We’re very grateful to be able to make a ‘credit union difference’ here in our own community.”
